Can Quality Services be provided to a Family with an individual with a Disability?

What does quality mean?

The dictionary meaning:
“The standard of something as measured against other things of a similar kind; the degree of excellence of something”. Or ” A distinctive attribute or characteristic possessed by someone or something”.

Quality of our behaviour is critical for personal growth. It becomes vital, especially when we become a service provider in a family with an individual with a disability. By embodying honesty, integrity, empathy, and respect, we can impact how we manage ourselves. Striving for excellence in our behaviour is a continuous reflection, learning, and growth process. The quality of our behaviour forms the foundation of healthy relationships with family interactions. Therefore, it is essential to maintain the highest standards of conduct when working with individuals with disabilities and their families.

Can answering these questions add to our understanding and assist in providing quality services?

  1. What is the extent of the disability?
  2. How does the family operate concerning an individual with a disability?
  3. What are the goals of the family concerning an individual with a disability?
  4. As a service provider, how do I fit into the family equation?

Providing quality means becoming objective about the challenges. The order of becoming objective is “Acceptance of our reliance on others and their effects on us.” Hence, we are embodying an honest position and becoming responsible for ourselves. We operate with integrity when we work on our sensitivities rather than putting our focus on others and blaming them. We become modest about our pitfalls instead of rationalising to get out of responsibility. This reflective behaviour helps in being non-judgmental about others.

Quality is a rigorous, never-ending process. There is no validation, being outside a group mentality, being that “one”. If the quality is consistent and stable, it will become the new normal.
